Writing Prompt: Sunflower Field

The tiny country road we were walking on was becoming busy with cars. Every time a car passed, we were pushed into a verge of nettles, so when I saw a gap in the hedge, I ducked in. We knew the place where we’d parked our car was right across the fields and there was a footpath sign, so we decided to follow it.

The trouble was, there was no obvious way out of the field in a straight line, so we followed the perimeter of the field. The sun was hot, there was no shade. We kept on like this for a while - following the perimeter of fields, ducking through a gap in a hedge. We lost all sense of direction.

At one point, we turned back the way we’d come because a herd of cows with their young were grazing on the riverbank. We also came upon a pheasant farm with the birds scurrying along the ground in amongst the trees. We followed the perimeter of the fence. And then came upon this sunflower field…

What happened next?

At this point, you can change point of view if you want to. Maybe become a bee on the flower. Maybe someone else arrives on the scene.

What else is happening in this field? What about in the field next to it and the one next to that?

Something supernatural? Something illegal?? It’s up to you!

If you don’t know where to start, begin by freewriting about the picture, then imagine you are the person walking in the field. Where are you going? Where have you been? What stops you getting where you want to go?
