This project is a collaboration with Sarah Bell, New Zealand fashion stylist from @spoiltvictoriannchild on Instagram. She sent me a photograph, I wrote in response to it, messaged her back, and she sent me another. It became a conversation between images and poetry.
The second photo Sarah sent was of her wearing a flowery dress. It reminded me of Blodeuwedd, a character from a medieval collection of Welsh tales called The Mabinogion.
In a nutshell, Blodeuwedd was created from flowers to be the wife of Lleu. He went away hunting one day and she fell in love with another man, Gronw. They plotted to kill Lleu, the husband. Then, the magician, who’d created her, Gwydion, didn’t like what she’d done, so he turned her into an owl as punishment.
Click on the photos below to read the poems. This is a work in progress – I’ll add more as I do them.
